“:” is a series of diptychs where images on either side offer an understanding of the other. “Colon”, a word which alludes to colonization, bares with its Chinese characters: 冒 號, the meaning of “risk”. non-, on the other hand, consists of series of images accompanied by short narratives. To appear less “foreign” to whites, Chinese merchants hired architects who have never been to China to build San Francisco’s Chinatown. Seen through filters, both “:” remind viewers that Chinatown is a space that is filtered, an eroticized western projection.
